The Doce River Basin (DRB) suffers with the adverse impacts of mining activities, due to its high level of urbanization and numerous industrial operations. In this study, we present novel insights into contaminant flow dynamics, seasonal variations, and the primary factors driving concentration levels within the region. We conducted an extensive analysis using a database sourced from the literature, which contained data on the contamination of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in the Doce River. Our primary aim was to investigate the patterns of As and Pb flow throughout the entire basin, their response to seasonal fluctuations, and the key parameters influencing their concentration levels. The results showed significant seasonal fluctuations in As and Pb fluxes, peaking during the rainy season. The 2015 Fundão dam breach in the DRB led to notable changes, elevating elemental concentrations, particularly As and Pb, which were subsequently transported to the Atlantic Ocean. These increased concentrations were primarily associated with iron and manganese oxides, hydroxides, and sulfates, rather than precipitation, as evidenced by regressions with low R2 values for both As (R2 = 0.07) and Pb (R2 < 0.001), concerning precipitation. The PCA analysis further supports the connection between these elements and the oxides and hydroxides of Fe and Mn. The approach employed in this study has proven to be highly effective in comprehending biogeochemical phenomena by leveraging data from the literature and could be a model for optimizing resources by capitalizing on existing information to provide valuable insights for drainage basin management, particularly during crises.

The potential use of elemental concentrations and element:calcium (Ca) ratios as indicators of provenance for bivalve mollusks on the Brazilian coast is evaluated herein for the first time. The approach was applied to shells of the mussel Perna perna (target of extractive fisheries) from geographically close areas but under distinct environmental and anthropogenic influences. Both concentrations of the elements normalized by Ca and the total concentrations can be applied to discriminate the mussels' origin. However, the canonical approach using the total concentrations indicated variations regarding the discriminatory power, and the concentrations of the elements normalized by Ca were more robust in differentiating the provenance of the shells. The origin of mussels was better discriminated by six elementary ratios: Al:Ca, Fe:Ca, K:Ca, Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca and Na:Ca. Thus, monitoring studies aiming to discriminate the origin of P. perna individuals along their distribution based on these elementary ratios of the shell are recommended.

The Paraíba do Sul River (PSR) Basin is a crucial drainage basin in Southeast Brazil, being the most industrialized and densely populated region in the country. Over the last three decades, the basin has been the subject of numerous studies due to its long history of mercury (Hg) contamination. This makes the PSR Basin an excellent model to evaluate Hg cycling, which is a priority for signatory countries of the Minamata Convention, which includes Brazil. This review compiled data on Hg from five environmental compartments (animals, plants, sediment, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water), three different sectors (upper, middle, and lower) and five different ecosystems (reservoir, mangrove, fluvial, estuarine, and coastal) from 60 published studies, aiming to understand the Hg cycling through meta-analyses. The highest concentrations of Hg were observed in the upper and middle sectors of the basin, which are areas with high industrialization and urbanization levels. Among the evaluated ecosystems, hydropower reservoirs showed the highest medians and were also frequent in the upper and middle portions of the PSR basin. Over the years, all environmental compartments showed a decline in Hg concentrations due to the implementation of federal and state environmental policies. The main source of Hg for the basin was Hg-rich soils from past activities (such as artisanal small-scale gold mining and the use of organomercurial fungicides in sugarcane plantations). These results can assist decision-makers in the management of the basin's ecosystems and can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Minamata Convention in the region.

In this study, we measured Ni, Co, Cd, and Pb concentrations in the whole blood of farmers from southeast Brazil to address the factors influencing human exposure in this population. The factors included smoking, alcohol consumption, aging, body composition, gender, and feeding preferences, which were measured through carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition. We also calculated and compared the reference values (RVs) of the measured elements to evaluate ongoing exposure levels. We observed the influence of lifestyle habits on metal exposure; Cd levels were statistically higher in smokers, and alcohol consumption affected only Pb concentrations, with an association also observed with the frequency of alcohol ingestion. The metal levels were positively associated with both isotope values, indicating that feeding may be the dominant source of these elements in this population. We also observed the effect of endogenous sources measured through age, as increased Pb concentrations in both genders and higher Cd levels in older women, which is related to bone, kidney, and liver accumulation. The body mass index was negatively associated with Ni, Co, and Cd in women and positively in men. The negative associations may indicate that body fat may act as a reservoir for metals, reducing their availability in the blood in individuals with higher body mass and possibly influencing the assessment of exposure levels. The evaluated population presented elevated RVs for all elements: Ni 36, Co 3.3, Cd 16, and Pb 149 µg L-1. These values point to higher exposure in this population compared to other studies in Brazil and worldwide. These results emphasize an urgent need for monitoring programs for toxic substances in Brazil and evaluating possible health effects, given the ongoing environmental exposure associated with endogenous exposure and lifestyle habits that promote higher metal levels in this population.

Lead (Pb) is a chemical element with extreme toxicity that is classified as one of the ten chemicals of most significant concern to human health. The main problem involving Pb is its use as a fuel additive (tetraethyllead - TEL) at a global level, which raised the atmospheric Pb concentrations. It is estimated that between 80 and 90% of the atmospheric Pb in large cities came from the use of TEL, and as a consequence, it was also the main source responsible for human exposure to the element. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate, through a systematic review, the blood concentrations of Pb in scientific articles published in the first two decades of the 2000s to compare the global and regional trends of each continent over time. Our data show the importance of removing TEL in decreasing human exposure to Pb worldwide. We observed exponentially decreasing blood Pb concentrations over the years after additive removal on all continents, resulting in a global trend which TEL's use was the major process governing human exposure worldwide. In addition, the results also showed that, despite the removal of Pb additives lowering levels of human blood Pb, the general population remains exposed to the element through exogenous and endogenous sources. The exhaust Pb particles were deposited into the environment in proportion to the traffic flows, and the legacy of Pb in the environment requires novel primary prevention remedy to curtail exposure.

The Brazilian Amazon is heavily impacted by mining activities, especially by gold and cassiterite mining. Pb is a contaminant released during cassiterite extraction, and it stands out for its high toxicity. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of flood pulse on Pb dynamics in four fish species with different feeding habits (Cichlapleiozona: carnivorous, Mylossomaduriventre: herbivorous, Prochilodus nigricans: detritivorous, and Serrasalmus rhombeus: piscivorous) over four hydrological periods in Puruzinho Lake (Brazilian Amazon), which receives water from the Madeira River. The risk assessment for daily Pb intake through the consumption of these fish by the local riverside population was also carried out. Fish species were sampled during four Amazonian hydrological periods: rising water, high water, falling water, and low water. Pb and stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) measurements were carried out on fish muscle. The flood pulse had the same effect on Pb concentrations of all the fish species regardless of their feeding habits, as we found a nonsignificant interaction between these variables. The Pb in fish muscle increased in the flood season (rising and high water) and decreased in the dry season (falling and low water). The Pb concentration in fish increased significantly with their trophic level (δ15N), evidencing the occurrence of biomagnification of the element along the trophic chain (R2 = 0.24). The main food source of the herbivorous fish (δ13C) was very distinct from that of the others, which had a large overlap in their values. Regarding risk assessment, the daily Pb intake through consumption of the herbivorous species during high water (17.82 ± 19.68 µg∙day-1) exceeded the limit determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of 12.5 µg∙day-1, representing a health risk to the riverside population of Puruzinho Lake.

In this study, total Hg concentrations (HgT) were determined in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) and the dissolved fraction of the water column to evaluate their behavior through a gradient of physical-chemical parameters in a continuum between rivers and the Serinhaém River estuary of the Pratigi Environmental Protection Area, a pristine environment without point sources of Hg contamination, located in Northeast Brazil. Twelve points were sampled, forming a river-estuary transect, and two samplings were carried out (April and September 2019). Significant spatial and temporal effects were detected only for particulate HgT and not for dissolved HgT. Considering both samplings, the mean HgT concentrations in SPM were 1112 ± 824 and 44 ± 33 ng·g-1 in the river and estuary, respectively. Also, HgT concentrations in the dissolved fraction (1.61 ± 0.61 ng·L-1) were below the limits established by environmental agencies (CONAMA = 2 µg∙L-1 and USEPA = 1.4 µg·L-1). Salinity and SPM concentrations were important predictors of HgT in the water column (R2 = 0.81, p < 0.0001; R2 = 0.56, p < 0.0001, respectively). Mercury transport to the ocean through SPM was 2 kg∙year-1, 4000 times greater than the dissolved fraction.

Mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation can be influenced by biological characteristics (e.g., trophic position) and environmental changes (e.g., seasonal flood-pulse), as it can create site conditions conducive to methylation and alter the availability of food to biota. This study aimed to relate total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in fishes of an Amazonian lake (Catalão Lake) to their dietary changes during different hydrological seasons (rising-, high-, falling-, and low-water). Levels of THg, MeHg, and stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon (δ15N and δ13C) were determined in the muscles of six fish species: Rhytiodus microlepis, Hemiodus sp., Triportheus albus, Anodus elongatus, Pellona flavipinnis and Acestrorhynchus falcirostris. Triportheusalbus, an omnivorous fish, showed a significant relationship between Hg concentrations and δ13C signatures (negative regression; THg: p = 0.0001 and MeHg: p = 0.0002), as well as between Hg and δ15N signatures (positive regression; THg: p = 0.003 and MeHg: p = 0.021), indicating that changes in feeding habits influenced the Hg concentrations in this species. The herbivorous R. microlepis presented the highest MeHg concentrations during the high-water season, reflecting Hg methylation in its diet (macrophyte roots) during flooded season. The piscivorous A. falcirostris had the lowest THg concentrations during this season because of lower prey availability. Slopes of the regressions between the Hg concentrations and δ15N values followed the sequence of rising- < high- < falling-water seasons (THg: 0.06 < 0.11< 0.15; MeHg: 0.07 < 0.10 < 0.17), indicating that the difference between the THg and MeHg concentrations observed for lower- and higher-trophic-level fish increased during the falling-water season, resulting in trophic biomagnification. The present study shows that feeding habit and the flood-pulse influence mercury concentrations in the muscle of fishes from Catalão Lake.

Recent reports of illegal small-scale alluvial gold mining activities (locally called garimpo) by miners working on rafts in the Paraíba do Sul River (PSR) and in one of its tributaries (Muriaé River (MR)) have raised concerns about Hg contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of garimpo activities on Hg contamination in three environmental compartments. Water, sediment, and aquatic macrophytes (Pistia stratiotes) were sampled during the rainy season in PSR, forming a 106-km transect from the point where garimpo rafts were seen and/or seized by the Federal Police. They were also sampled in the MR. Total and dissolved mercury (Hg) concentrations in water and total Hg in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) sampled in the PSR increased by 1.7, 1.5, and 2.1 times at the points where the rafts were seen compared to the point immediately upstream. In the MR, Hg concentrations were higher than those in the PSR, but most values in the environmental compartments were below the safe limits (174-486 ng∙g-1, threshold and probable effect level, respectively), with the exception of Hg in the SPM of one of the MR sampling points (256 ng∙g-1) and the mining tailings (197 ng∙g-1). Sediment granulometry was exponentially associated with Hg concentrations in the sediment (R2 = 0.75, p < 0.0001) and is also essential to understand the physical impacts of garimpo on PSR. Future studies should focus on assessing the seasonal variability of Hg concentrations in the studied compartments, especially if garimpo is identified during the dry season.

Damming rivers for hydropower generation interferes in the flow of water bodies and, consequently, in trace element biogeochemistry and transport. This study focused on the effects of dams on the seasonal dynamics of arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) in three fluvial systems (Itabapoana River, Flechas Channel and Paraíba do Sul River) and on the input of these elements to the ocean. The elements were evaluated in suspended particulate matter (SPM), surface sediments, and the roots of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes. Our results showed that the proximity of the dams in the Flechas Channel and Rio Itabapoana in relation to their mouth (distances of 4 km and 58 km, respectively) changed As and Hg seasonal dynamics in the environmental compartments analyzed, with the Flechas Channel being the most impacted area. In contrast, the lower part of the Paraíba do Sul River that has more distant dams to its mouth (distance of 184 km) did not show such marked changes, suggesting that most of the inputs are coming from the long river reach. The isotopic and elemental composition of organic matter indicated the soils of native forests as the main source of trace elements to the water bodies. Flow rate was the main driver controlling As and Hg ocean inputs, with higher inputs observed in the Paraíba do Sul River (9.69 and 0.59 t∙year-1, respectively) compared to the other assessed fluvial systems. Also, this study demonstrated that, if a dam is closer to the mouth of a river, less contaminants will be input.

Cr contamination is a growing concern in the Amazon. Along with the rise of cattle farming in the region, tanneries are becoming more common and threatening environmental quality, since the effluents from this activity are rich in Cr. The objective of this study was to evaluate the seasonal and spatial dynamics of Cr in fish with different feeding habits from Puruzinho Lake, located in the Madeira River basin, also determining the daily intake of Cr associated with the consumption of these fish by the population that lives around the lake. Seasonality and feeding habits directly affected Cr dynamics in fish (p < 0.0001), with medians of Cr concentration ranging between 0.07 mg kg-1 in the species Cichla pleiozona, a carnivorous fish, and 0.62 mg kg-1 in Mylossoma duriventre, a herbivorous fish. The high Cr concentrations in M. duriventre were related to the biodilution effect of Cr in the trophic chain (R2 = 0.14, p < 0.0001). The consumption of M. duriventre by the population was associated with the highest daily intake of Cr (55.5 µg∙day-1), exceeding the recommended limits of Cr intake (35 µg∙day-1). However, no harmful effects on health are expected due to the ingestion of Cr through the consumption of fish from Puruzinho Lake. Spatial analysis showed an increasing trend in Cr concentrations along the Madeira River, suggesting that contaminants present in the river are being carried over long distances and are reaching preserved areas of the Amazon.

Exposure to mercury (Hg) and pesticides (o.p'DDT, p.p'DDT, o.p'DDE, and p.p'DDE) in the Amazon through eating fish is of concern due to the large participation of this food in the diet of traditional fishing communities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the estimated daily intake (EDI) and the incremental lifetime cancer risk associated with Hg and o.p'DDT, p.p'DDT, o.p'DDE, and p.p'DDE in an Amazonian community. The results showed that for Hg, the EDI from carnivorous and detritivorous fish had the highest values, while for pesticides, the EDI from detritivorous fish intake had the highest value. The incremental lifetime cancer risk was below the permitted limit. A recommendation for controlling the high risk of exposure includes the reduction of detritivorous fish ingestion and/or replacement with herbivorous fish, which had lower EDI. We highlight the importance of investigating the human dietary patterns when estimating risk of exposure to Hg and pesticides.

Total mercury (Hg) concentration and stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) were used as chemical tracers in two crustaceans and four fish species that are targets of subsistence fishery in the inner estuary of the Paraíba do Sul River. This fluvial environment in southeast Brazil has a large historical utilization of Hg. δ15N was a better predictor of Hg concentration in the muscle (edible part) than δ13C; i.e., the Hg concentration was more closely related to the trophic position of species than species' trophic habitat. Consumers at higher trophic levels had higher Hg concentrations. The Hg concentration was below the maximum permissible limits established by the Brazilian Government in fishery products, and there are no human risks related to its consumption.

The presence of arsenic (As) in the sediment and the particulate and dissolved fractions of the water column determines its behavior and bioavailability. The main geochemical parameters responsible for As mobility are organic matter and oxide-forming metals such as Fe. The As distribution and its concentration were evaluated in the dissolved fraction, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment of the lower Paraíba do Sul River (PSR), its main tributaries (Muriaé, Pomba, and Dois Rios rivers), and flooded and estuarine areas. As was not detected in the dissolved fraction. The river flow influenced the As concentration in the SPM, which was higher in the dry season than in the rainy season (2.6 ± 0.69 and 1.98 ± 0.29 mg kg-1, respectively). The Fe oxyhydroxides, organic carbon, and surface area measured in the sediment were positively related with As concentration (R2 = 0.11, 0.34, and 0.30; p < 0.05). The highest As concentrations in the sediment occurred in the secondary estuary and flooded areas (5.16 ± 4.78 and 1.23 ± 0.44 mg kg-1, respectively), in which finer granulometric fractions (silt and clay) predominated (64% and 71%, respectively), in addition to greater surface area. The measurement of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) and atomic ratio (C:N)a indicated the existence of a combination of autochthonous and allochthonous sources of organic matter composing the SPM. In general, the As concentrations in the sediment and SPM were low, with values below that permitted by Brazilian regulations (5.9 mg kg-1), which suggests that the As sources in the lower basin of the PSR are diffuse and natural.

Mercury (Hg) biomagnification in fish food chains is a relevant subject due to the high fish consumption of the Amazonian population and the high toxicity of this metal. In the Amazon, floodplain lake hydrodynamics change considerably along the four seasons of the hydrological cycle (rising water, high water, falling water and low water), which can influence Hg bioaccumulation in fish. The main aim of this study was to evaluate if Hg biomagnification is influenced by seasonality in a floodplain lake (Puruzinho Lake) in the Brazilian Amazon. Additionally, the influence of food chain modeling on measurement of Hg biomagnification was tested. Hg concentrations and stable isotope signatures (carbon and nitrogen) were estimated in four species, Mylossoma duriventre (herbivorous), Prochilodus nigricans (detritivorous), Cichla pleiozona (piscivorous) and Serrasalmus rhombeus (piscivorous). The "trophic magnification slope" (TMS) of the food chain composed by the four species was calculated and compared among the four seasons. There was no significant seasonal variation in TMS among rising water, high water, falling water and low water seasons (p = 0.08), suggesting that Hg biomagnification does not change seasonally. However, there was significant variation in TMS among different food chain models. Lower TMS was observed in a food chain composed of detritivorous and piscivorous fish (0.20) in comparison with a food chain composed of the four species (0.26). The results indicate food chain modeling influences TMS results.

This study analyzed trace elements (As, Ba, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn) and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in egg yolk samples of female green turtles that nested in Rocas Atoll, Brazil, in 2017 and 2018. The trace elements concentration varied between years, with higher concentrations in 2017, suggesting that the nesting groups come from different foraging sites. The isotopic data indicated high overlap between years (73%), leading to an ambiguous interpretation on the turtles' foraging site. The Normalized Total Load presented a low association (0.01 < R2 < 0.41) with the stable isotopes. The Normalized Total Load that represents the trace element load in egg yolk is a holistic approach that can be applied elsewhere to predict ecotoxicology pathways in any animal species. We recommend a continuous monitoring to verify how the trace elements load behave in the nesting green turtles on Rocas Atoll.

Accidents involving economic activities of great impact, such as mining, have caused massive environmental damage. In November 2015, the dam of Fundão, located in the city of Mariana, MG, broke and released 5 × 107 m3 of tailings in the nearby ecosystems, including the Doce River. The physicochemical changes that occurred in the Doce River estuary were analyzed, as well as the trace metal concentrations, both 1 day before and 1 month after the disaster. The analyses of the collected samples (water and sediment) showed changes to the physicochemistry regarding dissolved oxygen, SPM, and temperature (p = 0.008, 0.001, 0.036, respectively). It also detected metals (Fe and Al) in the dissolved fraction beyond the limits recommended by the Brazilian legislation. There was an increase in the total concentrations of Fe and Cd in the sediment after the rupture of the dam and a change in mobile metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn), with higher concentrations of mobile metals being found closer to the ocean (p = 0.06356). After the rupture of the dam, there was a change in the granulometric fraction of the sediment, which became composed mainly of silt and clay. All of the results showed a change on the Doce River estuary, caused by the arrival of the tailings, which can result in future harmful effects with the release of metals present in the sediment and adsorbed to the particles. The changes to the sediment, such as changes in the granulometric fraction, can have negative consequences for the benthic community.

Environmental pollutants affect fish species differently because their routes of exposure make them more critical to a specific group regarding foraging habits or food preferences. However, the association between local problems and environmental conditions makes a particular species more suitable for use in monitoring programs. Thus, this study compared muscle accumulation of metals (Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ti and Zn) and toxicogenetic damage to three neotropical species from the Itapemirim River Basin (Brazil) with distinct foraging habits and feeding preferences: Geophagus brasiliensis (benthopelagic - omnivorous); Harttia sp. (benthic - detritivorous); and Leporinus copellandii (pelagic - omnivorous). There was seasonal influence on muscle metal concentrations: Ba and Mn concentrations in G. brasiliensis, Cr in Harttia sp. and Zn, Al and Fe in L. copellandii increased during the rainy season. G. brasiliensis was the most sensitive species, since it had a statistically higher prevalence of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities, which was influenced by seasonality. This result might be an effect of its benthopelagic habits, which favors contact with a larger group of contaminants due to its interaction with both water column and sediment. The present study showed the differential sensitivity of fish species and that the combination of chemical analysis of pollutants with evaluation of toxicogenetic responses helps to choose the best species for field studies.

Aquatic ecosystems in the Amazon are exposed to mercury, mostly from natural sources. Hg accumulation in fish tissues poses a risk to the local population since fish is one of the main sources of protein in the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate Hg distribution in demersal and pelagic carnivorous fish between seasons in Puruzinho Lake in the Brazilian Amazon. Total Hg was quantified in 221 individuals of 8 species obtained during the high water and low water seasons. Two-way ANOVA indicated an interaction between foraging habitat and season. During high water, total Hg concentrations were similar between demersal and pelagic fish, while in low water, total Hg levels were higher in demersal fish. Pelagic and demersal fishes' Hg levels were similar between the two seasons.

The present study evaluated the concentration of six trace elements in processed meat products and in meat cuts. We also assessed the risk associated with the consumption of these foods based on the estimated daily intake (EDI) of these elements. Fifty-eight processed meat and 148 meat cuts samples were analyzed using ICP-OES. As and Cd were not detected in any sample of processed meat. The highest mean level of lead was observed in frankfurters (0.056 µg g-1), which is half the maximum permissible level. For Cr, the highest mean concentrations were detected in chicken nuggets and beef hamburger (0.121 and 0.105 µg g-1, respectively), which are above the allowed limit. The comparison between the impact of a diet restricted to processed meats with a diet restricted to meats cuts showed that the individuals following the latter are exposed to higher amounts of the trace elements analyzed.
